And then it happened

As I sit done at the computer to write my blog,(and I really mean peck)I am again reminded that winter would eventually arrive. No matter how much I tried to deny it, or how much I didn't want it to happen, winter made it. Now I know that there are going to be a warm day here, and a sunny day there, but for the sake of this and many other conversations, it's here.
As the busy summer winds down, I get a chance to take a breather and look back at the summer that flew by. We saw a spring that was abolutely perfect! I mean we had days that were sunny and 75. The lawns were thick and green, and the weather was perfect to work outside, and everybody was happy to see it after the winter. I even remember making a comment during a phone conversation with a third year customer. Something along the lines that I hope this was not a sign of things to come, that even though the weather was great for work, I hope we weren't going to fall into drought conditions...and then it happened.
We got sooo much rain that it made it nearly impossible to make it through a day of work without getting soaked and falling behind in the schedule. Our mowing schedule was "upside down" for 4 or 5 weeks because of the rain. We had mulc and planting jobs that had to be rescheduled because we were so backed up with mowing...and then it happened.
We went from one extreme to the other. The summer was so dry that a lot of lawns actually died out this year. Every month I was making sure that everyone knew that they should be watering. I just read an article in a landscape magazine that talked about our drought. For the ENTIRE month of August, our region got .37" of rain. Are you serious? When the rule of thumb states that your lawn should recieve at least 1" per week, you can see why the lawns looked the way that they did.
I am sitting in my office at the computer wearing 2 sweatshirts and a hat too. I am looking out the window at a few flurries coming down, and I am wondering...WHEN will it happen?
